What Is The Boiler Scrappage Scheme ?
The UK boiler scrappage scheme was a scrappage scheme to subsidise up to 125,000 English households to install newer, fuel-efficient heating systems and stay warm without wasting energy.
Each qualifying household would receive a £400 grant from the government towards a brand new boiler.
IT ENDED IN 2017 BUT HAS BEEN REPLACED BY BETTER SCHEMES THAT ARE MORE ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE IN NEED OF UPDATED HEATING.
THE £400 GRANT HAS BEEN INCREASED TO GIVE PEOPLE A BRAND NEW BOILER FOR FREE.
Households that took part in the scheme were expected to save between £200 and £235 a year on fuel bills, cut their carbon emissions and sustain work for the heating industry.
The scheme was announced by the Chancellor Alistair Darling in a Pre-Budget Report at the end of 2009 and launched on 5 January 2010.
A similar vehicle scrappage scheme had already been announced in the 2009 budget. The total cost was to be £50 million, with a further £150 million for the Warm Front Scheme.
To qualify, one had to live in England and have a working G-rated boiler.
Successful applicants received a voucher for £400 off the price of either a modern A-rated boiler or a renewable heating system (such as a biomass boiler, heat pump or micro CHP).
After a completed installation, the voucher could be redeemed from the Energy Saving Trust for its £400 monetary value.
Some suppliers were criticised for high prices of the replacement boilers offered.
Even though some of the major power companies were offering a further £400 discount to match the government voucher, their overall price was still considerably greater than that from an independent fitter.
Unlike some other UK schemes, the scheme was taken up widely and all 125,000 vouchers were claimed within a few months, with the scheme then closing.
The current scheme is now targeted at benefits claimants, that have boilers over 18 yrs old or back boilers are fitted.

Why Is the government giving grants for boiler replacement ?
Most people on benefits will have an old boiler fitted and will not be able to afford the £2000 or so to have it replaced.
The government have stepped in with Grant Money from the Eco 4 Scheme to help these such people and the Grant For New Boilers Scheme was born.
For people not on benefits , you can choose the Boiler Upgrade Scheme which is a £7500 grant to upgrade to a heat pump.
Over a million boilers have now been exchanged since 2013 when the scheme first started.

Does The Boiler Have To Be Faulty To Qualify For The Eco 4 Scheme For Boilers ?
The boiler has to be below 85% efficiency which most non condensing boilers are. It does not necesarily have to be faulty to qualify for the free grant.
Our engineers have to do a thorough test including Energy efficiency tests, combustion and safeness tests to qualify it.
This does not apply to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme where all home owners can apply.
Can I get a grant for a new boiler if I'm not on benefits?
There is a scheme called LA Flex which allows people not claiming a benefit to qualify as long as they meet other criteria such as low income and health conditions.
A lot of councils have not signed up to this scheme and so many non benefit applications end up in the bin.
Feel free to apply but be aware that over 90% of applications are rejected sorry.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme was introduced in 2021 and has been extended until 2028.
This scheme, applicable in England and Wales only provides grants to help replace fossil fuel heating systems with more sustainable alternatives such as renewables.
Non Repayable Grants of £7500 are available for the installation of low-carbon systems, specifically heat pumps and biomass boilers.
Eligible Applicants will receive a grant of £7500 to cover part of the cost of replacing your existing gas boiler with a heat pump or a biomass boiler.
All Fossil fuel heating systems, including oil, gas, or electric, are eligible for replacement under this scheme.
Warmer Homes Scheme Scotland
The Scottish Government’s Warmer Homes Scotland programme offers funding and support to households struggling to stay warm and keep on top of energy bills.

Are there any Age Concern Boiler grants for pensioners?
Yes. Pensioners will be eligible as long as you receive Pension Credit and meet the other requirements, you can apply.
Are there any grants for new boilers if no boiler fitted?
There Are Free Boilers For Pensioners Even If You Do Not Have A Boiler Fitted.
You Can Apply For The Free Central Heating Grant For Over 60s . This grant will fit you a brand new heating system Free Of Charge if you meet the criteria.
Any grants for new boilers With british gas ?
British Gas is funding the Grant For boiler Scheme along with all the other energy companies but they do not take an active part in any installs or take applications for boilers.
The Scheme is called The Free Boiler British Gas Scheme because the general public does know it by this name.

Are There Grants For New Combi Boilers ? - My existing Is A System Boiler?
If you have a system boiler fitted, depending on which installer you are allocated, you may be able to get a free conversion to a combi on the grant scheme.
This will depend on how big a grant you are awarded which does depend on existing insulation levels and your EPC rating.

The Grant For New Boiler Scheme for NI has now closed to new applications. The UK Eco 4 Scheme is not available to The Republic Of Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Is The Boiler Grant Scheme Open To All Age Boilers?
NO- your boiler needs to be over 17 years old or be a back boiler.
We are getting a lot of applicants from people trying their luck stating their boiler is older than it really is. We check boiler age on the Gas Safe Register which gives us an accurate date of when the boiler was actually installed.
We reject all spurrious applications.
Do boiler grants cover maintenance or repairs?
Boiler grants primarily focus on the replacement of inefficient boilers with energy-efficient models.
They do not cover any maintenance or repairs , apart from any warranty issues that may arise in the 2 year warranty period.
Is Boiler Servicing In The Grant
No.
You are responsible for the yearly servicing payment yourself.
A boiler service should cost you around £60.

Can I apply for a boiler grant if I am a tenant?
No. Your landlord is responsible for your existing gas boiler and you will not be eligible to apply for a free boiler.
Private rented homes have been excluded from The Grant For A New Boiler Scheme since 2017.
What happens if my application is rejected?
Many applications for a free boiler are now being rejected due to tough criteria.
You will not be eligible applying elsewhere and we suggest you look around for a good deal privately.

Can I Apply For A Free Boiler Retrospectively
We do get some people who were not aware of the Grant For New Boiler Scheme and have purchased a new boiler privately and then found out they were entitled to the grant. They would like to see if they can claim back the price of the boiler they have paid out from the scheme retrospectively.
Unfortunately, this is not possible and you will not get anywhere by going down this route.
10 Things To Know About The Boiler Scrappage Scheme
1 – The boiler grant scheme, was introduced in 2013 to help millions of fuel poor households (those who spend more than 10% of their annual income on fuel) to replace their old or faulty central heating boilers for free.
2 – Only homeowners are eligible to apply.
Since October 2017 the government have changed the rules of the scheme which now excludes the Private Rented Sector.
Landlords now have to take responsibility for their gas heating in their properties.
3 – Boiler grants should be available until the Energy Company Obligation closes its doors on the scheme in September 2022 .
We do recommend that you do not delay if you are interested in applying as the scheme can be cut short at any time.
4 – If you qualify for the scheme you will receive a grant towards a brand new boiler (usually up to 75% is awarded depending on your property type and bedroom number ) which should result in cheaper bills.
You could save up to £300 a year if you’re replacing a G-rated boiler which are extremely inefficient
5 – The Boiler Grant Scheme 2019 is still being touted as a scheme to replace boilers for free however, due to funding cuts people are being asked to make a small contribution.
This contribution usually starts from £399 – £799 for a straight combi swap assuming no extras are needed.
This is a fantastic saving and is still very popular (apart from the free loaders who will not pay anything and make multiple applications trying to get it for free! Sad 🙂
6: Benefits Needed To Apply
The scheme isn’t open to everyone unfortunately.
You have to be on certain qualifying benefits to apply and the criteria is very strict.
Pensioners need to be in receipt of Pension Guarantee Credit and people of working age need to be on means tested benefits or on a disability benefit
In a nutshell, if you’re on specific benefits and meet set criteria there’s a subsidised boiler grant out there with your name on it. !
7- Energy providers risk massive fines if they don’t meet carbon emissions targets set by the Government.
8 : Boilers eligible for replacement must be over 6 years with a fault found.
Usually a valid reason to replace is that they are found to be less than 86% or they have an intermittent fault.
9 – Free Insulation Check Included with all applications.
The government wants all homes in the UK to be as insulated as possible and so as part of the process we will ensure that your loft and cavity are checked for possible new insulation.
10 – Over one million boilers have been replaced since 2013.
Is The £400 Boiler Scrappage Scheme Still Available?
No! The Boiler Scrappage Scheme that gave everyone a £400 voucher to scrap their old boiler ( regardless of whether they claimed a benefit ) ended in 2010.
You can however apply for a free boiler if you receive a benefit.
Boiler Scrappage Scheme Northern Ireland
The Boiler Scrappage Scheme for Ireland has now closed. There are no grants on this website for Ireland sorry.
Is This A Boiler Scrappage Scheme?

YOU ONLY GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR HOWEVER.
You can expect to pay between £2,000-£3,000 for a smaller house, whereas you can expect to pay between £3,000 and £4,000 for a larger home, depending on how much work is involved
