British Gas Boiler GrantsHow Much Money Do You Save By Replacing Your Boiler?
By replacing your old, in-efficient or broken boiler with a brand new, A-rated boiler you could reduce your energy bills by up to £300 per/year. Example – If your current boiler is only 65% efficient, (back boilers are notoriously inefficient) this means that for every £1 you spend on your heating, 35p is quite literally being wasted. Modern condensing boilers are 90% + efficient so you will only waste 10p for every £1 spent on heating.
If you want a conversion from a back boiler to a combi or vice versa the Grant will now cover the cost . This is an excellent saving from the full price of £3000 +. If you have any questions please contact us. We can send out a surveyor to assess your property.
How efficient is my gas boiler?
You rely on your boiler for hot water all year round. And in the colder months, you rely on it for heating too.
Doing all that takes a LOT of energy – over half the average home’s total energy use, in fact. So the efficiency of your boiler has a big impact on your finances as well as your carbon footprint.
Find out what the energy efficiency of your boiler means, how it’s measured, and some of the different factors that can affect how efficient your boiler really is.
What does a boiler’s energy efficiency mean?
A boiler’s efficiency is the amount of energy that actually goes into heating your home, rather than being lost or wasted.
If your boiler is 90% efficient, only 10% of the energy is lost.
But if your boiler’s efficiency is 70%, you’ll lose 30%.
A Boiler upgrade for anything over 20 years old is recommended as it will pay for itself in 8 years.
Of course, you still pay for 100% of the energy you use – so getting the maximum heat from that energy makes a lot of sense.
What can you do to help improve your boiler’s efficiency?
Just follow these steps to find out more.
What is ErP?
ErP stands for ‘Energy-related Products’.
It’s the European rating system for boilers and other heating appliances.
Every new boiler has an ErP energy label, which ranks its efficiency from A-G.
By law, all modern gas boilers in the UK are A-rated, which means they’re highly efficient.
What is SEDBUK?
There are two different versions of the SEDBUK rating system, which stands for ‘Seasonal Efficiency of a Domestic Boiler in the UK’.
SEDBUK 2009: The 2009 system gives each boiler an exact percentage score.
This is what to look for if you really want to get into the detail, but the difference of a few percentage points won’t have a massive impact on your bill.
The big savings come from swapping an old boiler for a new one.
SEDBUK 2005: This is the old system still used by lots of manufacturers.
Like ErP, it rates boilers from A to G. A-rated boilers score over 90% for efficiency, while G-rated boilers come in under 70%.
Why are new boilers more energy efficient?
In the UK, a 2007 law made it compulsory for all new boilers to be ‘condensing’ boilers.
This is a modern design that’s much more efficient than the old style of boiler.
Condensing boilers use the warmth from the hot gases expelled in the flue, rather than just letting all that heat go to waste. A condensing boiler will always be at least 90% efficient, or even more..
How much can I save with a new boiler?
This table shows how much you could save in an average year if you swapped an older boiler for a new A-rated model.
As you can see, the type of home you live in also makes a difference.
Detached house | Semi-detached house | Terrace house | Flat (mid floor) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
D (78-82%) | £375 | £305 | £235 | £125 |
E (74-78%) | £460 | £335 | £260 | £140 |
F (70-74%) | £590 | £380 | £290 | £160 |
G (less than 70%) | £840 | £540 | £420 | £230 |

Figures are calculated using fuel prices as of October 2022.
These are estimated figures based on installing a new A-rated condensing boiler with a programmer, room thermostat and thermostatic radiator controls (TRVs) in a gas heated home from an older boiler with a programmer and room thermostat. Savings will vary depending on the size and thermal performance of your home.
What type of boiler is most energy efficient?
If you’re choosing between a conventional, combi or system boiler, none of them is necessarily more energy-efficient than the others. But picking the right one for your property and family size will mean you’re using it in a more energy efficient way.
For example, if you’re in a small property with a small family, a combi boiler might be your best option.
A combi boiler makes hot water on demand, so you won’t be storing hot water that never gets used.
But if you have a large property and a big family, a combi boiler won’t be the most energy-efficient choice.
A system or conventional boiler is more likely to meet all your needs while helping to keep the bills as low as possible.
You can learn more about the different types of boilers here.
Is boiler size important for energy efficiency?
Yes, choosing the right size boiler for your property and your family has a big impact on energy efficiency.
When we talk about boiler size, we’re really talking about its heat output. This is measured in kilowatts (kW).
If your boiler isn’t big enough, it will struggle to provide the heat you need.
But if it’s too big for what you actually need, you’ll end up wasting a lot of energy in your heating and hot water.
Take a look at this article for more detailed guidance on choosing the right boiler size.
It also has a handy calculator to help you work out what’s best for your property.

How Does The Government Scheme For Free Boilers Work?
As a boiler is responsible for the majority of a home’s heating bill, it makes sense to have a boiler as efficient as possible fitted. Most people cannot afford to pay up to £2300 for a new boiler to be fitted ( average cost ) so a big ticket item like this would not be changed unless it was completely broken. Many homes have boilers over 15 years old limping on and wasting lots of gas which is why the government have allocated funding for assisting with the cost. Under the free boiler scheme low-income households in receipt of a qualify benefit are entitled to a Free upgrade or at the very least, it will be heavily subsidised of their old boiler to an A Rated energy-efficient boiler. Over 90% of free boiler applications receive 80% off the cost!

Free Boiler Scheme Abuse
The government recognised that the scheme was open to abuse and lots of tax payers money was not utilised properly for the good of the whole UK. Lots of people tried (and did) take advantage of what should have been an excellent scheme. Sadly the scheme was not very well thought out to take into account the various misuse of funding. Anomalies include:
- Perfectly functioning 5 year old boilers being replaced because it was free
- People having combi conversions ( worth up to £3000) because it was free
- People taking the piss and insisting on oversized boilers 34kw -38kw -42 Kw because it was free.
Thankfully introducing a charge has curbed this blatant misuse of public money for the greedy people in society.

7 Reasons To Replace Your Boiler
There are 7 key signs that you should look for that will tell you that it is time to send your old boiler to the man in the sky.
1. Your Boiler Is Over 15 years Old
Most condensing boilers have only got a shelf life of 15 years. Their design is to use the exhaust gases for extra heat whilst being more effficient, does reduce the shelf life unfortunately. Previous non condensing boilers would last up to 25 years.
2. Your energy bills are increasing
Are your energy bills gradually creeping up each month? If so, it’s likely that your boiler needs replacing. A boiler’s efficiency will usually decrease over time leading to more expensive energy bills.
3. The blue flame in your boiler has turned yellow
If the boiler has a yellow flame a technician should be contacted immediately to assess the seriousness of the situation. This is taken seriously because a yellow flame can indicate a malfunction with carbon monoxide in the heater. Carbon monoxide does not have an odor and is difficult to identify but it is important to identify it as soon as you observe a yellow flame.
4. Your boiler is leaking
A leak could simply mean theres a problem with internal components like seals or valves. In this case its time to call an engineer before it causes other problems that you absolutely want to avoid – like rust corrosion or structural damage to your home. If the leaks are becoming more common then your boiler is no longer a new boiler and needs to be replaced. Firstly your boiler is leaking which means your heating system is inefficient leaving you anxiously waiting for your radiator to work. their magic.
5. Your radiators take longer to heat up
This is not to say that every time you’re waiting for the heat to start warming you up, you should panic and get a new boiler. Remain calm. Sometimes, if your radiators are taking their time to get toasty, it might mean an internal malfunction – point four, for example – but often it’s a sign of a worn-out boiler that is approaching the end of its days.
6. Your boiler is giving off a bad smell
a bad smelling boiler can be a sign of a dangerous boiler. Although carbon monoxide has no odour, a sour smelling boiler may be a sign of a potential gas leak. If this is the case, turn off your boiler immediately and contact the Gas Emergency Services on 0800 111 999.
7 Replacement parts are harder to find
If you’re struggling to find the correct parts for the particular brand / model of your boiler, it is definitely time to consider a replacement. Do see if you are eligible for a grant before spending out your cash.
Do You Qualify for a Free Boiler?
Applicants for the free boiler replacement scheme must satisfy the following criteria:
- The existing boiler must be more than 7 years old with a fault found.
- Own your home or live with the home owner.
- Receive government benefits
